Nintendo to Terminate Wi-Fi Services for Old Wii, DS Models
Nintendo Japan and Australia recently announced the end of their Internet services to older models of Wii consoles and DS units. This means that any single or multiplayer games that require a Wi-Fi connection from Nintendo on a Wii, DS or DSi will lose its online features. This termination will also affect connections in the U.S. as of May 20.
Luckily, gamers will still be able to connect to the Internet on the DS for the DSi Shop, DS and DSi Browsers, while Wii users can still use Netflix, Hulu, Wii Shop Channel, Internet Channel, Pay & Play and YouTube. Any games that have been released since the 3DS launched in 2011 are still able to use the Nintendo Network after May 20. However, online features will also be unavailable to Wii software games played in Wii Mode on Wii U and 3DS systems.
Approximately 20 Wii games and 40 DS games will be affected by the disconnection of the Nintendo Network. So if you’re looking to save Princess Peach, you’ll want to give it your all—several Mario games will no longer be available to play on the Nintendo Network after May 20.
