GDC State of the Industry Survey: PS4 Development and Self-Publishing Trends
The 2014 Game Developers’ Conference kicks off in just a few weeks, and in advance of the conference, the conference’s organizers released the results of a survey about current industry trends given to attendees of last year’s event.
One notable result indicated that of the latest generation of consoles, the PlayStation 4 will be the top pick for game developers: About 20% of game-making teams anticipate their next title will be on the PS4. However, anticipated development on the PC far surpassed that percentage, with 52% of developers having selected “PC” on their surveys. Smartphones and tablets were the next runner-up for a planned platform at about 51%.
As for how those games will hit the marketplace, 64% of respondents stated that they did not plan to work with a publisher. As for how those game makers plan to fund their games, 52% plan to use existing company funds, and about 46% intend to use personal funds. Only 11% of developers stated that they made use of crowd-funded money, up from 4% last year.
