Various media outlets
obtained a copy of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s will this morning, which
was written 10 years before the actor died earlier this month in a New
York City apartment. He left his personal property to longtime
girlfriend Marianne O’Donnell, a costume designer, and also named her
guardian of his son Cooper. (Since writing the will, Hoffman has also
had two daughters.) He also set up a monetary trust for Cooper, half of
which will be conveyed when he turns 25, and the other half when he
turns 30.
There’s also a more unusual request regarding Cooper; Hoffman stated
in the will that he wanted him to grow up in one of three cities.
“It is my strong desire,” wrote Hoffman in the document that was
filed this morning in Manhattan’s Surrogate Court, “that my son, Cooper
Hoffman, be raised and reside in or near the borough of Manhattan … or
Chicago, Illinois, or San Francisco, California.”
“If my guardian cannot reside in any of such cities,” he continues,
“then it is my strong desire … that my son … visit these cities at least
twice per year throughout such guardianship. The purpose of this
request is so that my son will be exposed to the culture, arts and
architecture that such cities offer.”
O’Donnell was also appointed as the executrix of the will.
