The British Academy of Film and Television Arts presented its annual
awards on Sunday night, and the ceremony is unique among the major
awards shows in that it gives out a prize for “Best Film” and “Best
British Film.” Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave took the former honor and, puzzlingly, Gravity won for Best British film. That result was controversial
since Gravity is considered by most to be a Hollywood film, but
according BAFTA’s bylaws, the fact that the film had a British producer
and was shot in the UK using a British visual effects company was
enough. Not everybody was pleased, though, with some like Fearnet’s
Scott Weinberg arguing that “real” British films such as Philomena or Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom should have been recognized instead.
